Fair Housing Center of West Michigan

make that change

The FHCWM is pleased to offer these community resources regarding housing rights and responsibilities in the current housing market as impacted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The FHCWM has partnered with the City of Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Urban League, the Hispanic Center of West Michigan, Legal Aid of Western Michigan, and the Housing Stability Alliance among others to provide timely information about evictions including an overview of the eviction process, especially during COVID-19, for both private and federally subsidized rental housing.

The FHCWM has also gathered a list of housing and community resources that we hope are helpful to those looking for information for themselves or others.  We’ll do our best to keep them current.

For homeowners with federally or GSE-backed (Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac) or funded mortgages, you can find more information, including on the Federal Housing Finance Agency Foreclosure and Eviction Moratorium Extension (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac backed single-family mortgages only) here.  You can find help on finding who owns or services your mortgage here.

Please note that the FHCWM cannot assist with evictions.  However, if you feel that you are being treated differently in your housing, including during an eviction or other housing process, because of your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, disability, marital status, or age, please contact the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan at 616-451-2980.  Some local cities add source of income or sexual orientation as protected classes.   Fair Housing laws prohibit:

  • sexual harassment by housing providers
  • selective attempts to evict (for example, only families with children are evicted)
  • bias or hate-related harassment because of any of the above protected classes
  • harassment or refusal to house anyone who has had or is suspected to have COVID-19
  • refusal to work with people with disabilities for needed accommodations/modifications
  • denial of access of necessary caregivers or for seniors or others with disabilities
